Understanding the Types of Addictions
A dependency links two elements in the schedule: a predecessor and a successor. There are four types of dependencies in the schedule.
- End-Start (FS): The successor does not start until the predecessor has finished.
- Start-Start (SS): The successor does not start until the predecessor has started.
- Fin-Fin (FF): The successor cannot be completed until the predecessor is completed.
- Start-Finish (SF): The successor can only be completed once the predecessor has started.
For example, milestone a milestone as a predecessor to a phase an End-Start relationship and a duration of 1, the phase 1 day after the milestone ends.
You can also add a delay (in days) between the predecessor and the successor.
Create a dependency
Three ways to create a dependency between a milestone phase milestone and a successor.
Draw an arrow on the Gantt chart
- Hover over the milestone phase milestone on the Gantt chart.
- Click and drag the handle that appears on the edge of the element to the milestone phase milestone .
If you view âś… Valid : The dependency is created, and an arrow appears between the two elements.
From the element edit window
- Double-click the milestone phase milestone .
- Go to the tab
Edit a phase milestone Predecessors or
Edit a phase milestone Successors.
- Click on
Add a dependency.
- Click on
Register.
From the contextual menu
- Select multiple phases or milestones in the WBS section WBS the left by holding down
Ctrl. - Right-click.
- Click on Add dependencies.
Dependencies will be added automatically between the selected phases:
If you have phase (June 10–June 20) and phase (June 20–June 30):
When you select Phase and then Phase in the WBS section WBS the left, the dependency is added in Late-early, from Phase to Phase
When you select Phase and then Phase in the WBS section WBS the left, the dependency is added in Late-early, from Phase to Phase .
The selection order determines the direction of the dependency.
Modifying a dependency
There are two ways to modify a dependency:
From the element edit window
- Double-click the phase milestone.
- Go to the tab
Edit a phase milestone Predecessors or
Edit a phase milestone Successors.
- Click on the desired value to select it.
- Click on
Register.
From the window of the outbuilding
Remove a dependency
There are four ways to remove a dependency:
From the gantt chart
- Click the dependency arrow.
- Click on the red X that appears.
From the element edit window
- Double-click the phase milestone.
- Go to the tab
Edit a phase milestone Predecessors or
Edit a phase milestone Successors.
- Click on the desired value to select it.
- Click on Remove a dependency.
- Click on
Register.
From the window of the outbuilding
- Double-click the arrow between the two items.
- Click on
Delete.
From the contextual menu
- Select multiple dependent phases or milestones by holding down
Ctrl. - Right-click.
- Click on Remove dependencies.
Display the critical path
Displays the critical path the sequence of phases and milestones that determines the minimum project duration is highlighted in the gantt chart. This is useful for identifying at a glance the elements that, if they fall behind schedule, will directly impact the project’s end date.
